Houston

A Bit About the Bayou City: Houston, Texas

This isn’t a full-blown essay about Houston . . .but the city has come to mind several times over the past few weeks.  And that gave me an insight into genealogical research. Houston is home to the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center (“Mission Control”) and the renowned M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and The University of Texas Health Science Center At …Continue reading →

My Families in the 1940 Census

I was excited as anyone when  the 1940 census was released. I immediately went to work trying to find my families. I was a volunteer indexer through FamilySearch.org and I enjoyed that experience immensely.  It was great to be part of a worldwide network of people working towards the same goal. During the period of time before the indexing was …Continue reading →

The Grand Genealogy Journey 2010 (Virtual Edition) Starts Anew

Believe it or don’t, but it’s been three years since the Big Train Trip.  I’m really ready to go again, but circumstances currently won’t allow that.  So we started to lay out our virtual genealogical dream trip traveling via Amtrak and other conveyances.  We ran into a set of difficulties soon after the beginning of the trip.  As a result, …Continue reading →

Black Catholic History Month: The Catholics in My Families

The number of black Catholics in the United States is small.  I know this both anecdotally and empirically.   I  was probably a teenager before I met another black Catholic family.   My parents, each for their own reasons,  converted to Catholicism as teenagers.   They did not know each other at the times of their conversions. My mother was raised as the …Continue reading →

Good Schools A Staple of Ancestors’ Lives

This was produced for the 17th edition of “Smile for the Camera” I really don’t have much in the way of  photographs on my ancestors’ school days.   I have in the past posted school census records from the very early twentieth century in Milam County, Texas, where my gg-grandmother and her descendants lived.  But I know virtually nothing about my …Continue reading →

He later moved to Houston where he was the chef at the renowned Ye Olde …Continue reading →

I Love Ancestry’s Expanded, Updated City Directories

Last week, Ancestry.com updated and repackaged its U.S. Directories and U.S. Public information databases.  These are now all a part of Ancestry’s “1940 Census Substitute.”   Part of the upgrade was acquisition of  what Ancestry VP for Content Gary Gibb called ” a huge collection of city directories.”   I was excited about this from the outset.  I’ve long understood the value …Continue reading →
